There are always a few things that strike you as odd or different when you are in a foreign country for the first time. The fact that I only know very little Japanese and can only read Hiragana and Katakana, but absolutely no Kanji (except for EXIT), probably doesn’t help! Here is my personal list of impressions and little giggles.
First of course, the toilets: the “spray” and “bidet” are fabulous! Most of the toilet seats are heated too, which is a surprise the first time you sit on it! Some toilets play music, or sounds of birds and rivers. We even had one with a dryer (a bit uncomfortable) and a massage (couldn’t figure out what it does).
There are vending machines everywhere! They usually have hot and cold drinks and sometimes ice cream, alcohol, cigarettes, snacks or entire meals.
The plastic food is very helpful, but this is a bit over the top!
The road signs are usually in Kanji, so we can’t read them, but the ones we can read are always very polite. The translations are interesting!
I love the Japanese sense of humour!
This is an emergency evacuation slide in a nursing home!
And then there are the cheeky school kids, ....
..... the three-storey golf courses, .....
.... the traditional shoes and dresses, ....
.... the cute and/or scary statues, .....
.... bicycle parking at train stations and...
... some things we just don’t understand!
