Japan 2019 - Japanese Food

Japanese food in the Setouchi region is amazingly diverse, interesting and healthy. Apparently, over 500 marine species live in the Seto Inland Sea. Not surprisingly, most meals include many different species and preparation styles of seafood and seaweed. What was surprising though, is the diversity and beauty of sweets!
Food is cheaper than expected. You can get a full meal for $10 to $20. The 7-Eleven shops and FamilyMarts sell very cheap and fresh salads, bento boxes and sushi rolls. Only beef is much more expensive than in Australia.

These are all pickled vegetables!

Drying fish in the street.....

.... and lots of different ones in the supermarket!

We first thought this was a drink with fish in it, since it came out of a vending machine! Luckily somebody bought one and I could ask (in Japanese!) - it’s for cooking!

The diversity of vegetables and mushrooms is amazing too!

A whole shop full of different lemon cakes!

Many pastries and desserts are with custard or cheese - delicious!

And then there are the lollies, biscuits, cakes, mochi and ice creams!
