Japan 2019 - Shodoshima

Shodoshima is a small island famous for its mediterranean climate and olive trees. It seems to attract a lot of local tourists, especially from Osaka. For us, it was the first ferry trip in Japan, the first rain, the first visit to an onsen (hot spring) and the first mountain to ride (total of 1,400m elevation due to undulating coastal roads and a major hill). We passed a traditional stone mason, a soy factory, the oldest school in Japan and a giant statue of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy.

The bicycle gets very neatly tied up on the ferry. You just hand it over and walk away!

Hot coffee and green tea from a vending machine!

Some of the English translations are very cute!

Riding around the island and then over the top of it.

Japan has a lot of different shrines and temples everywhere.

Getting ready for a visit to the onsen. This is the view from our hotel!

Hotel breakfast, including....

.... Natto, which are fermented soy beans. They look like they are covered in snots and smell like dirty socks, but apparently are very healthy!

  1. How did the snotty beans taste and how did you get Kirsten to eat them? Looks like you are getting beautiful clear sunny weather.
